Sáádúúts (Robert Peele) is Tsimshian-Haida from the village Hydaburg, on Prince of Whales Island, in Southeast Alaska. He is a carver by trade and has had a hand in the carving of seven canoes at The Canoe Project at the Center for Wooden Boats on the south shore of Lake Union. Sáádúúts inlcudes children in the carving, passing on the tradition. “It’s up to us to teach our ways. Everyone must be a leader to train the young ones”, he told me during a recent visit. Much respect goes into making a canoe, from the cutting of the tree, to the carving and passing on of tradition.
Sáádúúts is front and center in the last photo.
You can go on a 2-hour canoe trip around Lake Union with Sáádúúts this summer, while supporting Daybreak Star. Look for this gift on their IndieGoGo campaign page: http://ow.ly/sY1VE
