Last weekend, I attended the 2016 Luc Robitaille Celebrity Shootout, an annual hockey game to raise funds for Echoes of Hope. Founded by Luc and Stacia Robitatille, Echoes of Hope is a wonderful non-profit organization that provides support to emancipated foster youth, as well as other youth in need.
This year, for the first time, the Shootout was held in Los Angeles at the Toyota Sports Center (technically, in El Segundo). Besides the change in venue, they also moved it from January to March, which was likely due to a scheduling conflict with seven of their participants–the pop band R5 (Riker Lynch (bass guitar, actor in Glee), Rocky Lynch (guitar), Ross Lynch (lead vocal, actor in Austin, Ally), Rydel Lynch (keyboard), Ellington Ratliff (drummer), Ryland Lynch (DJ), Mark Lynch (father))–who were on a worldwide concert tour promoting their new album, Sometime Last Night, until three days before the event. They were a big draw with the teenaged crowd again this year.
Other returning celebrities included Michael Rosenbaum (Impastor – season 2 starts filming in Vancouver this week, Board of Echoes of Hope), Allison Baver (2010 Winter Olympics Bronze medalist speed skater), Isaiah Mustafa (ShadowHunters – renewed for 2nd season), David Boreanaz (Bones), John Ondrasik (Five for Fighting), Michael Vartan (Alias), David Henrie (Wizards of Waverly Place), Taylor Dayne (recording artist) and Steven R McQueen (Chicago Fire, The Vampire Diaries, son of Luc and Stacia). Lorenzo Henrie (Fear the Walking Dead) and Billy Flynn (Days of Our Lives) filled out the celebrity roster.
There were lots of NHL greats as well. Rob Blake, Peter Ferraro, John Kidd, Glen Murray, Landon Donovan (well, he’s a soccer player), Mike Donnelly, Nelson Emerson, Chris Ferraro, Jason Marshall, Derek Armstrong, Craig Johnson, Sean O’Donnell, Jamie Storr and Pierre Turgeon.
